Marielle Valenteijn

Halomedics collaborates with Marielle Valenteijn for horses.

Let me introduce myself.

I am Marielle Valenteijn and I have been active in various branches of equestrian sports since a young age. After completing my education as a veterinary assistant, I worked for several years at various large animal veterinary practices. Eventually, I pursued my passion in sports and have been running my own business, Fit by Valenteijn, for many years. My focus is on personal training, small group sessions, and group training in my own studio and outdoors. Additionally, I conduct rider fitness workshops and manage a small private boarding stable for Icelandic horses at home. While I wouldn't describe myself as a typical "horse girl," I have a deep love for horses.

The health of your horse is paramount, and I am dedicated to keeping your horse healthy and fit. During my time at veterinary practices, I encountered many horses with skin and respiratory problems. Often, medication alone was not sufficient to alleviate their symptoms. When Halomedics approached me for a collaboration, I did not hesitate. As a horse owner myself, I understand the importance of having a healthy and fit horse, and I am committed to maintaining their well-being.

Halotherapy has already proven itself abroad for horses with (chronic) respiratory and skin conditions, achieving excellent results. It is also widely used to enhance the performance of sport horses. My background in equine medicine and practical horse knowledge, combined with the expertise and experience of Kim and Marleen in salt therapy, provide a solid foundation for treating your horse!

How does it work?

A session in the mobile salt chamber lasts 30 minutes. While the horse relaxes in the salty air, it inhales medicinal salt from the latest type of generator. The salt then penetrates deeply into the airways.

Equipment in the mobile salt chamber includes: a generator that blows salt particles into the space and supplies fresh air, a ventilation system with a bacteria filter that removes all dirty particles.

Halotherapy promotes respiratory system

Salt is a natural anti-inflammatory and kills bacteria and fungi. When medicinal salt is deeply inhaled, it reaches the lower airways where it purifies the respiratory system.

Salt is known to extract moisture. It removes moisture from (trapped) mucus, making it easier to cough up or naturally leave the body. Additionally, salt also extracts moisture from pathogenic (disease-causing) cells, which slows their division and reproduction. Moreover, pathogenic cells are more likely to perish quickly. This property of salt is known as osmosis. By killing pathogenic cells, the immune system is strengthened. Furthermore, increased oxygen transport occurs due to the expulsion of deep-seated mucus.

To achieve these effects, regular visits to a mobile salt chamber or salt stable are necessary.

Halotherapy promotes healthy skin

The halogenerator provides mineral-rich air. These minerals can be absorbed not only through the lungs but also through the skin. The salt penetrates deep into the skin cells, improving the skin's quality. Salt has antibacterial and antifungal properties, reducing the risk of inflammation. Additionally, salt enhances oxygen transport from the bloodstream to the skin.

Halotherapy can help alleviate irritated, itchy, and inflamed skin caused by wounds or conditions. Due to its finely ground nature, salt penetrates deeply into the skin cells. Salt is a natural anti-inflammatory and kills bacteria and fungi. This natural process cleanses the skin.

Halotherapy for horse ailments

Halotherapy is beneficial for horses with the following conditions:

  • Sticky mucus
  • Asthma
  • Inflammation of the upper and lower airways
  • Coughing and bronchospasms (spasms of the lungs)
  • Fungal infections of both skin and airways
  • Colds and acute infections
  • Pneumonia (after the acute phase)
  • Folliculitis
  • Allergy symptoms
  • Bronchial asthma
  • Chronic obstructive bronchitis
  • Moisture
  • COPD, dampness
  • Eczema, mud fever, sweet itch, summer eczema
  • Skin irritations and skin inflammations
  • Wounds
  • Pastern dermatitis, scabies

How often should a horse use the salt trailer?

Every horse reacts differently, so there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

On average, the following treatments are recommended:

Non-chronic conditions: 5-10 treatments
Horses on medication: 7-14 treatments
Horses with chronic conditions: 20-25 treatments
Horses with severe respiratory distress: 25-35 treatments
For use in competitions, we recommend: the last session 1 to 2 days before the competition and another session after the competition to cleanse the lungs.

After treatment, allow your horses to graze with their heads down to facilitate mucus removal.

The power of Halotherapy lies in repetition. The body begins to cleanse, and with continuous stimulation, the results improve.

We generally advise: 7-10 days with 1 to 2 treatments per day. The sicker the horse, the longer the recovery needed.

A session in the mobile salt chamber lasts 30 minutes. Your horse can be alone or with another horse in the trailer (provided they are comfortable together). You can also stay with your horse to benefit from the salt therapy. The climate in the salt trailer mimics natural salt mines, ensuring both humans and animals inhale the same amount of salt.

Halotherapy for Sport/Racehorses

Halotherapy is a drug-free performance-enhancing treatment for competition horses. It is currently very popular and widely used in America and England.

There are currently many different methods of Halotherapy applied to horses. Some methods use hoods where the horse inhales salt through a mask. This can be quite stressful and there is a higher risk of bacteria lingering in the hose.

Therefore, we prefer the most researched method, which is without a mask and using medicinal salt.

** Halotherapy reduces the use of antibiotics and medications with their many side effects.

** Salt therapy is used in many countries as part of the training regimen for sport horses.
