Halotherapy and Asthma
Asthma bronchiale is a chronic disease that affects 5-10% of the Dutch population, more prevalent among children and young adults but also occurring in older adults. Asthma is characterized by inflammation of the lungs, which is persistent. This means there are always small inflammations present in the lungs. Asthma can cause various symptoms.
Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing.
During an asthma attack, the muscle tissue in the airways contracts, narrowing the airways. In addition to muscle contraction, inflammation causes swelling in the middle layer of the lungs, and mucus production increases. This mucus can partially or completely block the airways.
Asthma attacks are typically triggered by certain factors. This could be a specific allergen or exposure to cigarette smoke, for example.
