Magnesium Inhalation and Asthma
Asthma is a chronic disease affecting 5-10% of the Dutch population, more prevalent among children and young adults but also present in older adults. It involves inflammation of the lungs, which is persistent in asthma, meaning there are always small inflammations present in the lungs. Asthma can cause significant symptoms.
Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing. During an asthma attack, the muscle tissue in the airways constricts, narrowing the air passages. In addition to muscle constriction, inflammation causes swelling in the middle layer of the lungs, leading to mucus production. This mucus can partially or completely block the airways.
Asthma attacks often have triggering factors, such as specific allergens or exposure to cigarette smoke.
